Activities

At Highlands Camp, Challenge by Choice is our guiding philosophy for adventure activities. Campers are encouraged to try each activity and are empowered to choose their level of participation. We believe that self-determination and agency foster the greatest personal growth. Campers are allowed to explore their comfort zones and push beyond their self-imposed limits at their own pace.

Archery

Archery

Take aim, fire, bullseye! Archery provides campers with the opportunity to hone a new skill and learn that practice makes perfect. Certified instructors safely lead campers in the sport of archery at our outdoor range. Campers learn about the parts of a bow and arrow and how to take proper form so they can hit their mark. Campers in every camp session will get the chance to try their hand at archery and embrace their inner Katniss Everdeen!

Rock Climbing at Summer Camp

Rock Climbing

Highlands Campers climb to new heights at the outdoor, natural rock-climbing crag. Campers are equipped with helmets, harnesses, and climbing shoes as they reach for the sky and test their physical limits. Campers are safely belayed by expert guides from KMAC guide service. Campers in every session have the opportunity to rock climb.

Canoeing

Canoeing and Pedal Boating on the Pond

The Highlands Pond provides an opportunity for campers to take to the water on canoes and pedal boats. Campers can race other campers in boat races or explore the riparian ecosystem as they enjoy time on the pond. Pond activities are closely supervised by counselors and a lifeguard on duty. All camp sessions include time at the Pond.

Arts and Crafts

Arts & Crafts

Inspired by nature, campers tap into their creative side. Counselors plan craft projects and help campers create art that will remind them of their time at camp for years to come. Campers may make friendship bracelets, create painted rocks, craft sun prints, tie dye t-shirts, and loads of other projects.

Hiking

Hiking

Located on 293 forested and meadowed acres, the hiking opportunities at Highlands are abundant! Campers will hike down to Rock Creek, explore the Hidden Room (a Highlands classic!), and even get the chance to climb Three Crosses for sunrise.

Outdoor Skills

Outdoor Skills

Highlands Camp helps children embrace nature and become confident in the outdoors. Campers learn how to start a fire, tie knots, build a shelter, identify native plants, and so much more. When campers show mastery in a skill, badges are earned and worn with pride.

Nature Play

Nature Play

We believe in the power of disconnecting from technology and connecting with nature. Children’s lives have become increasingly busy and structured, leaving little free time to play and explore. There are few opportunities in a modern young person’s life to leave the phones behind, gather with a large group of peers, and play outside. We create space for a childlike sense of wonder to shine by providing meaningful experiences in nature and allowing time for campers to explore the natural world around them. Under the careful supervision of our professionally trained counselors, campers have room to roam, build, create, and imagine beyond the confines of four walls and phone screens.

Sports

Sports

Playing sports provides campers with the opportunity to practice teamwork and cooperation. Campers will have the opportunity to play both structured and camper-led games of basketball, volleyball, disc golf, and the camper favorite…gaga ball! Have fun with your friends as you test your skills in the gaga pit or let your disc soar!

Low Ropes Challenge Course

Low Ropes Challenge Course

Campers hone their team building skills on the low ropes challenge course. Each initiative challenges campers to practice communication, leadership, listening, and teamwork as they work together to overcome obstacles.

Campfire

Campfire

A summer camp classic. Cozy up around the fire ring to sing campfire songs, answer riddles, perform skits, and roast s’mores.

Special Spot

Special Spot

Campers are given the opportunity to find their very own special spot, or sit spot, at camp. A special spot is a place in nature where campers sit and spend time observing, listening, writing, drawing, meditating, and connecting with the earth. This sensory activity is a practice in mindfulness and presence where campers get to know the world around them on a small, personal scale.

Nature Journaling

Nature Journaling

Nature Journaling allows campers to observe nature and better understand their environment. Campers use tools such as journal, pens and pencils, magnifying glasses, field guides, and rulers to write or draw about their discoveries. Campers might draw their favorite flower, write a story about a footprint, or lead their friends on a plant scavenger hunt based on their recorded findings of a leafy subject.
