Returning campers?
Professional Staff Team
We know that your child’s safety is of the utmost importance when you’re considering sending them to camp. Our camp staff team is professional, experienced, and undergoes extensive training. Safety is our top priority.
Highlands Camp is directed by our Program Director who will be present 24/7 during camp weeks. Each camp will have a minimum of two camp counselors who will guide campers through activities and provide constant supervision and care.
All staff are hired for their experience, related education, enthusiasm, and expertise in working with school-age children in a camping environment. Your child will be supervised 24 hours a day by friendly, warm, and thoughtful adult role models. All staff are 18 years of age or older and undergo an application process, 3 reference checks, state and federal background checks, and a thorough staff training program that covers policies and procedures, emergency plans, child development, conflict resolution, and behavior management. All staff members have training in First Aid and CPR.
Highlands Camp also has a Registered Nurse on staff who is responsible for treating illnesses and injuries, administering medication, and notifying parents/guardians of the illness or injury as soon as possible. The Program Director is also a trained Wilderness First Responder.

Payments can be made by signing into your account. Final payment is due 2 weeks prior to the start of camp. Failure to make a payment may result in the cancellation of your child’s camp registration.
Policies and Procedures
We want our camp families to be informed about camp’s poliecs, procedures, and emergency action plan. These documents can be viewed here.
Medications
Colorado Resident Camp Standards require that all medications (prescription, over-the-counter, homeopathic, herbal, etc.) and food supplements (including vitamins, nutrient bars, etc.) be retained and administered by the camp medical personnel and that they be prescribed by a licensed health care provider. Medications or food supplements, of any type, not listed on the Licensed Medical Provider form cannot be stored or administered by Highlands medical staff and should not be brought to camp.
All prescription medications must be in the original container from a licensed pharmacy, labeled with pharmacy information, name of the camper, name and strength of the medication, directions for use, date filled, prescription number, and the name of physician prescribing the medication. Over-the-counter, homeopathic, herbal, etc. medications and food supplements must also be in the original container with the camper’s name clearly written on the container.
Please place all medications in a zip lock bag labeled with the camper’s name and give it to the camp’s medical staff person at check-in. Epinephrine pens & inhalers should be kept in the camper’s possession. These medications must be listed on the health history form as well as the medication list signed by the child’s physician. Please remind your camper that the pen or inhaler should be kept with them at all times and they are not permitted to share these with other campers. Highlands does not keep our own supply of Epinephrine pens or inhalers.
Homesickness
For many children, the first time away from home can be scary. Sometimes, it’s harder on the parents. Usually, after a day or two to adjust, children take to camp life and are happy they stayed in camp. Highlands staff is trained to help campers through the transition and help minimize homesickness by making sure that each camper is welcomed, introduced to their cabin-mates, given lots of individual attention and included in all activities.
You can help your child adjust by letting us know about any stressful situations your camper may already be experiencing, such as the death of a loved one or pet, separation of parents, moving to a new home, etc. Parents and guardians can help prevent homesickness by going through the parent/camper handbook together, answering any questions they might have, and writing your camper a letter to be delivered during the week. We ask that you DO NOT suggest that your child may call home if they get homesick or that they may come home early.
If your child does develop homesickness and is unable to overcome their concerns in a reasonable amount of time, our Program Director will call you to plan the best response for your child.
For the peace of mind of parents and guardians, we plan to email a few photos of camp out during the week so you can see what fun your camper is up to.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do campers sleep while at Highlands Camp?
What will my camper eat while at camp?
Daily meals include breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack. Meals are served via a cafeteria line, and a salad bar is available at lunch and dinner. Meals are planned to be balanced and nutritious.
Highlands Camp kitchen staff will make every effort to accommodate special diets. We ask campers with dietary requirements or limitations to notify us at least 14 days prior to the opening day of camp to ensure the proper food and substitutions are available. If there is a food or substitution that Highlands is unable to secure, they will work directly with you to make alternative arrangements. Highlands Camp can usually accommodate most diet needs.
A few favorite camp meals include homemade cinnamon rolls, hamburgers and potato wedges, burrito bar, and ribs with mac and cheese.
How many counselors are with each camp group?
Camp staff will maintain a minimum ratio of 1 counselor to 10 campers. Each camp will have a minimum of two counselors (typically one male and one female) with up to 20 campers. These ratios are in accordance with Colorado’s childcare licensing standards and the American Camp Association’s accreditation guidelines.
What is the smart phone/technology policy?
Camp is a technology-free experience. Cell phones and smart watches are NOT permitted at camp. We invite campers to use this week to disconnect from technology, while deepening connections with friends and nature. If a camper brings a smart device to camp, it will be kept in the camp office for the remainder of camp.
Please note, there is no cell phone service at camp. Our staff use radios to communicate with each other and landlines or Wi-Fi calling will be used to communicate with parents when necessary.
